Chilean Peso Falters as Dollar Regains Strength, Copper and Costs Weigh on Outlook

According to TradingView data as of April 30, 2025, the Chilean peso trades at 945.22 per US dollar, reflecting a clear shift in sentiment since mid-April. The peso rallied earlier in the month, pushing the USD/CLP rate down from above 1,000 to below 940.

However, the last week saw the dollar regain ground, with the exchange rate climbing steadily and breaking resistance levels at 941 and 945. The 200-period moving average, now at 958.33, remains a distant ceiling, but the trend points upward.

The peso’s recent weakness comes after a short period of stability. Between April 25 and 28, the currency held firm, supported by stable copper prices and a cautious sense of optimism in local markets.

As April closed, traders moved back into the dollar, driven by renewed risk aversion and persistent uncertainty in commodity markets. Copper, which underpins much of Chile’s export revenue, failed to rally enough to offset these broader pressures.

Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, reported a 53% drop in pre-tax profit for the first quarter. The company cited negative exchange-rate effects and higher costs as major factors.

This development underscored the vulnerability of the peso to both global commodity trends and domestic cost structures. Recent weeks also saw outflows from emerging market funds, while commodity-linked ETFs attracted some inflows, reflecting mixed investor confidence.

Chilean Peso Outlook

The technical picture reinforces the fundamental story. The USD/CLP price now sits above short-term moving averages, confirming the upward momentum.

The recent candles on the hourly chart show the market breaking through resistance, with the 200-period moving average acting as a key barrier that traders watch closely.

The average USD/CLP exchange rate for April stands at 966.98, while the current level is near the lower end of the month’s range. This suggests that, despite recent weakness, the peso has avoided a return to the extreme volatility seen earlier in the year, when the rate spiked above 1,000.

Historical data shows the peso’s path this year has been anything but smooth. The exchange rate peaked at 1,016.26 in January and averaged 964.55 over 2025. The lowest rate this year, 916.80, came during a brief rally in March.

The peso’s fate remains closely tied to copper prices and global risk sentiment, with local factors like Codelco’s performance and cost pressures adding further uncertainty.

Market participants now watch copper prices, ETF flows, and global risk appetite for clues. The peso’s near-term direction will likely depend on whether copper can recover and if global investors regain confidence in emerging markets.

For now, the Chilean peso remains under pressure, with the dollar’s strength and commodity market uncertainty dictating the story.
