Chile Spain relations rest on trade, bank lending and Spanish-owned businesses that run parts of Chile’s economy. The 3 November audience in Madrid put those links in the spotlight.

This guide answers the questions a reader abroad would ask. The news report on the meeting is in Chile’s Leader Meets Spain’s King in Madrid.

What Is Confirmed

Chile’s government says Kast and Felipe VI spoke at the Royal Palace in Madrid on Tuesday, 3 November. The talks covered security, organised crime, investment, artificial intelligence and the Ibero-American Summit.

In Plain English

José Antonio Kast is Chile’s conservative president and has been in office since March. Felipe VI is Spain’s king, a ceremonial head of state who does not set government policy.

Banco Santander is Spain’s largest bank and has a large business in Chile. The Ibero-American Summit is a regular meeting of leaders from Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries, held in Madrid on 4 and 5 November.

The High Seas Treaty is a UN agreement that protects marine life in international waters. Chile wants its port city of Valparaíso to host the treaty’s secretariat, in competition with Brussels and Xiamen in China.

Why Spain Matters to Chile’s Economy

InvestChile, Chile’s foreign-investment agency, said in June 2025 that Spanish investment in Chile totals US$20.7 billion. That ranks Spain third among foreign investors, mostly in finance, energy, communications and infrastructure.

Spain’s weight also comes through the European Union. EU-Chile goods trade reached €21 billion (about US$23.5 billion) in 2025, making the EU Chile’s third-largest trade partner.

An interim EU-Chile trade agreement took effect on 1 February 2025. The EU says it also backs lithium, copper and green-hydrogen projects in Chile.

Why Security Is on the Table

Organised crime was one of the main topics, according to Chile’s government. Chile’s government says the two sides spoke about strengthening institutions and sharing information to fight it.

A Rio Times background guide, Chile Security and Crime Explained 2026 covers the domestic picture. No joint police or judicial agreement has been announced.

Where the Visit Fits in the Tour

Kast arrived in Madrid on Monday, 2 November, and met Santiago Abascal, leader of the conservative Vox party. He also received a regional medal from Madrid’s president, then spoke at a Santander banking conference on Tuesday before seeing the king.

He then heads to Italy, where Pope Leo XIV is due to receive him on Wednesday, 4 November. He returns to Madrid for the summit, which runs through Thursday, 5 November.

Earlier Rio Times coverage of the tour itinerary is in Chile Leader Tours Europe Amid Minister Row. The meeting with the king is covered in the news report linked above.

What It Means for You

US investors with exposure to Chilean banks, utilities or copper miners should watch whether Spanish groups announce new projects. A courtesy audience alone does not move any of those businesses.

US travel advice and entry rules for Chile and Spain have not changed because of the visit. More background is on the Chile hub, in Chile in Latin America and in Valparaíso, Chile Explained 2026.

What Is Not Known

No investment amount, contract or signed agreement from the meeting has been announced. The king’s own account of the talks has not been published.

The account of the topics comes from Chilean government statements relayed by local media. The date of Kast’s return to Chile is also not confirmed.

What Comes Next

The next steps are Kast’s meetings in Italy and the Vatican on Wednesday, 4 November, then the Ibero-American Summit in Madrid. Watch for any named Spanish investment or a joint security initiative.

The host of the High Seas Treaty secretariat is due to be chosen at the treaty’s first conference of parties. That decision will show whether Spain’s support for Chile’s bid counts.
