What Chile Day actually is

Chile Day is Chile’s yearly sales trip to the world’s big money centers. Think of it as a national roadshow.

It is organized by the investment platform InBest and Chile’s Finance Ministry. The panels cover the economy, green finance, pensions and the rules for investing.

The event began over a decade ago and now travels the globe each year. Earlier 2026 stops already passed through New York and Toronto.

This year’s European leg lands in Madrid on September 14 and London on September 16. Organizers expect about 700 guests in Madrid and 500 in London.

Quiroz’s big bet

Jorge Quiroz is Chile’s finance minister and a trained economist. He earned his doctorate at Duke University in the United States.

He helped design President José Antonio Kast’s economic program before taking office. Now he wants Chile Day to be the international showcase for his reform.

For Kast’s young government, this is a chance to prove it is open for business. A strong reception abroad would calm nervous markets at home.

What the reform contains

The reform aims to make Chile an easier place to buy and hold financial assets. It is wide-ranging, but a few pieces stand out.

The government wants to make the peso a more international currency. It also wants Chile to export more financial services abroad.

One eye-catching change scraps the capital-gains tax on shares in unlisted companies. Other tweaks touch the cap on lending rates.

Fresh rules would also cover bonds, stocks and mutual funds. The aim is bigger markets that are easier to trade in.

Why does this matter to ordinary savers? Deeper markets can mean better returns on your pension and cheaper loans for local firms.

A relationship worth billions

Spain and Chile have been business partners for decades. Spanish money helped build Chile’s highways, airports, hospitals and water plants.

Sacyr arrived in 1996 and never left. Last year Chile delivered 423 million euros in revenue for the company — its richest market on earth.

Chile now holds roughly a third of Sacyr’s global concession assets. The group runs 20 concessions across the country.

Other Spanish names run pieces of daily Chilean life. Abertis, Globalvía, OHLA and Acciona hold roads and hospitals too.

The trial by fire in Madrid

Here the showcase turns into a test. Chilean media have called this Chile Day a “trial by fire” for the government.

The reason sits in the Biobío region in southern Chile. The government recently suspended private road concessions there.

One of the contracts belonged to the Spanish builder Azvi. That decision rattled every Spanish firm working in Chile.

The worry is about signals, not just one road. Concessions let private firms build now and get paid back over decades.

Quiroz has admitted the country faces a tight budget for years. Spain’s construction giants fear Chile is drifting toward state-funded works instead.

So when Quiroz speaks in Madrid, these are the people listening. A 2026–2027 pipeline worth about US$8 billion hangs on their trust.

London’s turn: energy and metals

Two days after Madrid, the show moves to London. There the pitch leans on Chile’s role in the global energy transition.

Chile is the world’s top copper producer and a leading lithium supplier. Both metals sit at the heart of electric cars and clean power.

London investors will also weigh Chile’s reputation for stable rules. Quiroz wants them to see an open economy — not a risky one.

Why this matters if you live in or invest in Latin America

Chile is the region’s testing ground for market-friendly policy. When it wins or loses foreign trust, the whole neighborhood feels it.

A good showing in Madrid could mean cheaper money and more building across Chile. That ranges from toll roads to hospitals you might one day use.

A bad one could push investors to demand higher returns from Santiago to Bogotá. The peso — which hovers near CLP 914 (~US$1) — often moves on exactly this kind of confidence.

You do not need to own Chilean stocks to feel it. Confidence in one Andean economy tends to spill into its neighbors.
