Cemex Navigates Market Challenges to Secure $48 Million Profit in Q4 2024

Cemex, the Mexican cement behemoth, reported a net profit of $48.31 million in the fourth quarter of 2024, as disclosed in their latest earnings release.

Despite facing a 5% sales drop to $3.81 billion, the company managed to surpass the adversities by implementing price hikes. Analysts had anticipated a figure of $91.29 million, according to LSEG, but Cemex countered the shortfall with strategic cost management.

The company experienced significant volume declines in its primary markets. In Mexico, mid-term elections led to a slowdown in construction activities. In the U.S., natural disasters like hurricanes and a Texas freeze reduced profits by approximately $38 million.

However, Cemex remains hopeful for the U.S. market in 2025, expecting growth in infrastructure and manufacturing sectors.

To address the revenue dip, Cemex introduced “Project Cutting Edge.” This initiative aims to boost EBITDA by $350 million by 2027 through operational efficiency and digital advancements.

Cemex’s Strategic Growth

The project is set to contribute $150 million to earnings this year, enhancing free cash flow. Cemex’s strategy now emphasizes growth via small to medium acquisitions, particularly in the U.S., while also focusing on debt reduction and shareholder returns.

The firm has divested from non-strategic businesses in the Philippines, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic to concentrate on core markets. Despite economic and climatic challenges, Cemex’s net leverage ratio stands at a resilient 1.81 times, its lowest since 2007.

The company also progresses in sustainability, reducing CO2 emissions by 15% in Scope 1 and 17% in Scope 2 from 2020 levels, aligning with its 2050 net-zero carbon goal.
