Brazil's São Paulo stock exchange chains its fourth consecutive rise and renews its record high
Brazil’s São Paulo stock exchange claims its fourth consecutive rise and sets new record high.

The São Paulo market continues to be euphoric, despite the uncertainty that still hangs over Brazil due to the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic and its effects on the domestic economy.

The market once again broke its record in the first session of the week. The previous high was reached last Friday, when it closed at 125,561 points, surpassing the 125,076 recorded on January 8 of this year.

Traders welcomed with optimism the latest fiscal data of the country, which in April reduced its public deficit by 2.1 points to 10.8% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and its gross debt, now at the equivalent of 86.7% of GDP.

On the other hand, financial analysts consulted by the Central Bank raised Brazil’s growth forecast for 2021 from the 3.52% projected a week ago to 3.96%.

However, traders ignored the health risk posed by Brazil’s decision to host the Copa América starting next June, when the country is said to be facing a new upsurge of Covid-19 infections.

Nevertheless, the São Paulo stock exchange added 654 units to its accumulated score and surpassed for the first time the barrier of 126,000 at the close.

According to preliminary results, the financial volume reached R$21.546 billion (US$4.1 billion) on Monday, in a total of 3,349,115 financial operations.

Leading the gains in the Ibovespa were the shares of the bioethanol producer Cosan (6.61%), the electricity company Eneva (4.59%), the pharmacy network Raia Drogasil (3.11%), the software company TOTVS (2.74%), and the mining giant Vale (2.86%).

On the other hand, petrochemical company Braskem and electricity company Equatorial Energia led the session’s losses, with their shares falling by 3.23% and 2.71%, respectively.

On the day, the most traded shares were Vale’s common shares and the preferred shares of the state-owned oil company Petrobras (-0.44%).
