Last Wednesday, Brazil’s Navy and Tourism Ministry introduced the SafeSail app (Navseg) to enhance maritime safety nationwide.

SafeSail is a free app. It adds comfort and security for both boat operators and passengers in Brazil’s waters.

The main goal is simple. The Navy wants to improve safety for everyone at sea. The app targets not just sport and leisure boats, but also small fishing and tour vessels.

Here’s how it works. Download the app, input operator and boat details, record your travel plan, and share it. You’re good to go.

SafeSail uses mobile signals to track boats. The closest port authority monitors this data during your sea journey.

This tracking feature speeds up help in emergencies. It makes it easier to locate any vessel in distress and send assistance swiftly.

SafeSail is available for free on Android and iOS. It replaces the old Departure Notice, which you had to fill out manually. Now, boaters can set sail more easily.

Marine Safety Background

This app isn’t Brazil’s first attempt to enhance marine safety. Years back, the country relied mainly on paper logs and radio checks.

Boat operators had to visit port offices to declare their travel plans. Often, this was cumbersome and time-consuming.

In the early 2000s, GPS tech started becoming more popular. But GPS alone wasn’t enough.

It didn’t provide a way to share travel plans or allow for emergency aid. The Navy realized the need for a more modern solution.

Around the globe, tech-driven safety measures are the norm. In the U.S., apps like BoatUS have been helping boaters for years.

In Europe, SafeTrx offers a similar service. These apps influenced Brazil’s decision to launch SafeSail.

Brazil’s move also lines up with its push for tourism. The country aims to be a go-to destination for water sports and leisure sailing.

SafeSail paves the way for this, making Brazil’s waters safer and more appealing for everyone.
