The Brazilian stock market soared on May 8, 2025, with the Ibovespa index jumping 2.12% to close at 136,232 points. This marks its highest level in eight months.

The benchmark briefly touched an all-time high of 137,635 points during intraday trading before settling slightly lower. Trading volume surged to 1.35 billion shares, nearly double the previous day’s 753 million.

Financial stocks powered the rally, with Banco Bradesco leading gains. Its preferred shares (BBDC4) surged 15.64% while common shares (BBDC3) rose 14.04% after the bank reported first-quarter earnings that exceeded analyst expectations.

Stock exchange operator B3 SA rallied 9.1% amid the record trading volumes. Petrobras climbed 2.2%, buoyed by firmer oil prices and optimistic news about senior U.S. and Chinese trade envoys meeting in Switzerland.

This development sparked hopes for relief from recent U.S. tariffs on Brazilian exports. Market breadth showed overwhelming positive sentiment. Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones by 589 to 340, with 60 issues remaining unchanged.

The top gainer was Azzas 2154 SA (AZZA3), which skyrocketed 22.03%. On the downside, meatpacker Minerva SA (BEEF3) fell 7.69%. The rally came despite Brazil’s central bank hiking its benchmark Selic rate to 14.75% the previous day.

Investors interpreted the move positively because policymakers dropped language about inflation risks being “tilted to the upside.” This subtle shift suggests the bank may be nearing the end of its aggressive tightening cycle.

Technical indicators strongly favor bulls. The index trades above all major moving averages, with the RSI at 75.6 and MACD showing strong positive momentum.

The breakout above the recent 133,000-134,500 range signals potential for further gains, though overbought readings suggest caution. Brazil faces challenging macroeconomic conditions.

The unemployment rate rose to 7% in Q1 2025, its highest level since May 2024. Economic growth is expected to slow to 1.6% this year from 3.4% in 2024, according to BBVA Research.

Inflation remains stubbornly high at 5.48% for the 12 months through March, well above the central bank’s 3% target. Foreign investors have injected R$10.8 billion ($1.93 billion) into Brazilian equities in the first four months of 2025.

However, April saw modest outflows of R$133.6 million as concerns over U.S. tariffs dampened sentiment. The CBOE Brazil ETF Volatility index rose 2.92% to 29.60, suggesting some underlying caution despite the day’s strong performance.

The Brazilian real strengthened against the dollar, with USD/BRL falling 1.39% to 5.67. Looking ahead, traders will monitor upcoming economic data releases, further developments in U.S.-China trade relations, and the central bank’s future interest rate decisions.
