In 2022, Brazil’s B3 ranked first among the exchanges where the most futures contracts were traded
The São Paulo Stock Exchange (B3) ranked first among the exchanges that trade the most futures contracts, according to a survey by the Futures Industry Association (FIA), the global association for the futures, options, and derivatives markets.
The information was released on Tuesday, Feb. 7, by B3.
These contracts involve operations of agents with different perspectives of the asset’s price, i.e., while one party expects the price to rise, the other bets on a fall.

The value is composed of an interest rate agreed upon between them.
In 2022, 5.7 billion contracts were negotiated.
The number is 112% higher than the Istanbul Exchange in Turkey and 120% higher than the Chicago Exchange in the United States, second and third places, respectively.
B3 also led the list of exchanges that trade the most futures contracts linked to a stock index and in interest rate futures contracts.
Last year, 4 billion Ibovespa mini futures contracts – B3’s main index – were traded.
Concerning the number of trades with individual stock options, the Brazilian stock exchange was also in the first place, with 1.8 billion trades in the year, surpassing the main Indian Stock Exchange, Mumbai.
The options market follows the same logic as the futures market, but the investor trades the right to buy and sell an asset at a certain price for a certain future date.
The difference is that, in the options market, the buyer can decide whether or not to purchase the asset on the agreed date.
“The numbers show the competitiveness of our market. Besides local investors increasing their participation in the Brazilian stock market, there is also a large portion of foreign investors trading here, and not only in products linked to interest rates but also in shares of Brazilian companies and currencies,” said Luís Kondic, executive director of Listed Products and Data at B3, in a statement.
The FIA gathers data from 87 exchanges worldwide, including major markets such as the United States and Europe.
