The head of state affirmed that the permanent representative of the Latin American country at the UN headquarters in New York, and before the Security Council, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, received the indication to work on the proposal.
“This is what we propose with the war in Ukraine, peace should be sought, because the work to avoid that war was not done, neither the leaders of the powers nor the UN (…), five years for the governments to take care of the needs of the people,” added the president.

On August 5, López Obrador proposed the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, and Pope Francis, as mediators of his proposal for a five-year truce between the powers represented in the world body’s security council.

The proposal contemplates that in this period of truce, the powers address “the serious and great problems of each nation”, as an extraordinary action.
“We are proposing [that] Pope Francis, the Prime Minister of India, Modi, the Secretary General of the UN, all three seek dialogue with Russia, with Ukraine,” the president said. Mexico occupies the non-permanent seat of Latin America in the UN Security Council.
The support of the highest international organization is important in the proposal “so that there are no vetoes and to achieve a truce of at least five years, without nuclear tests, without threats, without interventions, without participating in internal conflicts,” he continued.
The objective of this truce is that all the governments of the world dedicate themselves to confronting the crisis that affects billions of human beings.
“There is still time, because the people are greatly harmed by a war, the Ukrainians, they are suffering from displacement, and the effects on the economy, inflation, all this that Europe is suffering from the lack of gas,” said the chief of the federal executive.
The president’s international diagnosis highlights the lack of growth of the economies, the increase in poverty and inflation worldwide due to the rise in fuel and food prices.
