Chilean Senate rejects impeachment of President Piñera

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Chile's Senate on Tuesday (16) rejected impeachment proceedings against President Sebastián Piñera over suspected irregularities in the purchase and sale of a mining company before he became president, revealed by the journalistic investigation known as the "Pandora Papers".

Piñera's impeachment had been approved last week in the Chamber of Deputies.

The impeachment was rejected by at least 14 of the 43 senators, plus at least one abstention; the final vote has not been counted. The opposition needed 29 votes to remove the president, who will now finish his second term in . . .
