Valle de Angeles: Honduras’ new destination where Bitcoin takes center stage

Bitcoin (BTC) continues to make inroads in Honduras. There will be at least two more communities in the Central American country where the cryptocurrency Bitcoin will get all the attention and be a way for foreigners to pay for products and services.

A month after “Bitcoin Valley”, the municipality of Valle de Ángeles, thirty kilometers from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa, wants to become another location open to the new Bitcoin economy.

With hotels, stores, and businesses that accept BTC and other cryptocurrencies. Behind this plan are the local government of Valle de Ángeles and companies associated with the Chamber of Commerce of the country.

These organizations contacted “Blockchain Honduras,” “Descentral Academy,” and “Coincaex,” which are active in bitcoin in Central America. At least twenty companies in Valle de Ángeles joined the movement three weeks ago by introducing them to the new economy.

In addition, all owners of Bitcoin organizations have been trained to accept BTC as a means of payment.

The Guatemalan company “Coincaex” equips merchants with POS devices called “Bitpos.” Through these devices, merchants charge their customers Bitcoin, although they receive the company’s local currency, “Lempiras”.

They recall that in the eyes of the Central Bank of this country, only the “Lempira” is the currency with this qualification. Wilfredo Ponce, mayor of Valle de Angeles, told the local press that merchants would begin pilot tests next week. The idea is to “create a Bitcoin zone between Santa Lucia, Valle de Angeles, and Cantarranas.”

According to the Blockchain Honduras organization, the latter is a region that will join Bitcoin before the end of the year. “We believe that with this cryptocurrency, we will attract more foreign tourists and Hondurans who want to have the experience of paying with Bitcoin,” the mayor said.

According to Richard Francis Roberts, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Valle de Angeles, the use of “BTC” in this region does not pose any risk to the merchant or entrepreneur “because they always receive lempiras.”

That is unless they decide otherwise and use alternatives to receive only “BTC”, such as a self-custodial wallet. Roberts explained that “BTC” is a “point-of-sale payment option.”

While he is unsure if it will attract more tourists, it will make the “Valley of Angels” more attractive.” Valle de Angeles is part of Santa Lucia, a tourist town in Honduras that gave birth to the Bitcoin Valley project, which follows similar projects in other Central American countries.
