Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer has announced that the Chinese aviation authority has approved its E190-E2 regional jet. It could compete with the Chinese regional jet ARJ21.
China has been slow in allowing the latest generation of Western jets and turboprops to compete with domestic counterparts. This week, however, the ATR42-600 turboprop was also registered during Airshow China in the southern city of Zhuhai.

A more fuel-efficient version of the older E190 already in service in China, the E190-E2 seats up to 114 passengers and was registered in Brazil, the United States and Europe in 2018. Capacity is comparable to the 90-seat ARJ21 regional jet and the 168-seat narrow-body C919 jet manufactured by Commercial Aviation Corp of China (COMAC).
Embraer said in a statement that the E190-E2 and the larger E195-E2, which can seat up to 146 passengers, will complement the ARJ21 and C919 in terms of capacity. The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer said it is also seeking Chinese approval for the E195-E2, which it expects to receive shortly. According to Embraer Commercial Aviation CEO Arjan Meijer, the certification of the E190-E2 will open further business opportunities in China.
