Brazilian government creates embassy in Manama, capital of Bahrain

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Brazilian diplomatic representation will be based in Manama, the capital of the Arab country. Up to now, Bahrain was represented by the Brazilian Embassy in Kuwait.

Bahrain has had an embassy in Brazil, based in Brasilia, since 2018. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1974.

According to the federal government, the opening of a diplomatic mission in Manama will contribute to the promotion of economic-trade cooperation between the two countries. The bilateral trade flow is the 6th largest between Brazil and a Middle Eastern Arab country.

Brazilian exports to Bahrain are concentrated in ores, chemical products, iron, steel and mineral fuels, which represent around 90% of the exported value. Agribusiness represents between 8% and 9% of the exported value, mostly in meat.

“The presence of the Brazilian resident embassy in the Bahraini capital will facilitate business relations between the two countries, will contribute to the regional coordination of commercial promotion and investment attraction activities, and may favor the local performance of the other Brazilian bodies involved in activities of this nature, such as Apex-Brasil. Negotiations on protocols and certificates will also benefit from the installation of the mission in Manama,” said the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic in a statement.

AIRLINE AGREEMENT

President Jair Bolsonaro also signed an air services agreement with Bahrain on Wednesday. The text had been passed by the National Congress.

In general, the agreement grants the two countries the right to sell and market international air transport services, directly or through agents or other intermediaries, including the right to establish their own offices, both as operating and non-operating companies, and to use their own transportation documentation.
