Brazil: Lula da Silva’s government promotes review of pension reform, announces minister

The government of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will promote the revision of the social security and pension reform carried out in 2019, with the aim of “increasing the rights” of citizens, announced this Tuesday the Minister of Social Security, Carlos Lupi, upon assuming office.

“We need to discuss in depth what this anti-reform of the retirement and pension system has been,” said Lupi during a speech in Brasilia.

The new minister of the new Brazilian government led by Lula da Silva, who took office last Sunday, convened a commission that includes representatives of pensioners, the federal state, unions, and business entities.

The pension reform was one of the largest projects approved by former President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), which extended the years of work and the calculation required for the retirement of workers and increased the retirement age of women from 60 to 62 years.

“We are going to prove that the pension system is not in deficit,” said Lupi, also president of the Democratic Labor Party (PDT).

According to the minister, a dialogue is necessary between all parties to carry out a new reform of the pension system that emerged in 2019.

“We are a society that we have to understand that the majority, not the minority, has to be protected by the State system,” he stressed.
