With 89% of the vote counted nationwide, socialist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT, left) leads the first round of the presidential elections with 47% over conservative Jair Bolsonaro (PL, right) with 44.5%.
In the critical southeast region, Bolsonaro leads in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Espirito Santo and is tied in Minas Gerais.
