Brazil is the main target for criminal organizations in Latin America, topping the ranking of DDoS attacks with 285,529 records (39% of the 727,686 in the entire region).
This is according to the latest DDoS Threat Intelligence Report from Netscout System, a leading global cybersecurity solutions company.
With an average duration of 16 minutes and a maximum strength of 288.16 GB per second, the main targets of cybercriminals are Brazilian mobile (33,593) and wired telecommunications (10,050).
Other sectors, such as data processing servers (7,584), insurance agencies and brokers (7,078), and local cargo transportation companies (2,007), also attract the attention of criminal groups.
In the LatAm region (which includes 20 countries), 49% of attacks lasted between 5 and 15 minutes and focused mainly on wireless (48,420), wired (41,969), and data processing servers (11,310) of telecommunications facilities.
BRAZIL LEADS THE WAY IN FRAUD, INCLUDING VIA WHATSAPP
According to research by Kaspersky, a Russian digital security company, Brazil is also a leader in scams using fake links via WhatsApp, the famous phishing.
The cybersecurity firm detected 76,000 scams of this type in South America’s largest country last year, with 82.71% of the fake links blocked by Kaspersky focused on WhatsApp.
Its competitor Telegram was in second place with 14.12%, followed by Viber (3.17%).

DDoS attacks, also known as Distributed Denial of Service attacks, are an attempt to make a system’s resources inaccessible to its users.
It is a service invalidation where the website or network service remains offline.
