RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil recorded 1,803 deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths from the coronavirus to 353,137, while the daily average number of victims in the last week once again exceeded 3,000 deaths on Sunday, an average that the country had only reached ten days earlier.

According to the Ministry of Health’s report, the country accumulates 13,482,023 SARS-CoV-2 infections, after 37,017 new cases since the previous day.

The number of cases and deaths due to coronavirus reported on Sunday is the lowest of the week. However, authorities have reiterated that the numbers are usually lower on weekends due to a lack of staff to record data.

The average number of daily infections in the last seven days rose to 71,010 infections, after the average of 64,324 recorded last Sunday, and close to the maximum daily average reached last March 27 in Brazil (77,129 cases).

The same did not occur with the average number of deaths, which after falling to 2,747 deaths per day a week ago, now stands at 3,101 victims, close to the maximum daily average reached on April 1 (3,117 deaths).

The data show that the mortality rate rose in one week from 157.7 to 168 per 100,000 inhabitants, and in the same period of time, the incidence of infection went from 6,179 to 6,415 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Brazil, with its more than 210 million inhabitants, is going through the worst phase of the pandemic since the coronavirus arrived in the country a little more than a year ago, and continues to be the second nation in the world with the highest number of deaths and infections due to the virus.

The worsening of the health crisis coincides with Brazil’s slow vaccination process due to the lack of available doses.

According to the Health Ministry, so far, more than 47 million doses of immunizers have been distributed throughout the country, of which some 25.3 million have been applied.

Of this total, some 19.8 million people – 9.4% of the country’s population – received the first dose, and another 5.5 million – 2.6% of Brazil’s total population – have already received the second dose.
