Bolivia and Russia strengthen relations through new military cooperation strategies. Officials from the Defense Ministries of Bolivia and Russia recently convened to discuss new strategies to bolster bilateral military cooperation.

The meeting occurred in Moscow during the International Military-Technical Forum ARMY-2023, as the Russian Ministry of Defense reported.

The Bolivian delegation was led by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Army General Hugo Eduardo Arandia López, while Deputy Defense Minister Colonel General Aleksandr Fomín represented the Russian side.

Both military leaders explored new strategies during the negotiations to enhance cooperation between their respective ministries.

It is worth mentioning that Bolivia and Russia have previously signed several technical-military cooperation agreements.

However, to date, there has been no public information regarding the signing of any contract for acquiring Russian military equipment by the Bolivian Armed Forces.

The Bolivian Army, as part of its reequipment plan, intends to acquire light armament (assault rifles, machine guns, etc.), tactical vehicles, armored vehicles, and artillery, among other materials and equipment.

Additionally, the Bolivian Navy had indicated in past years that it needed “armored boats” for troop movement, emergency response during natural disasters, and hovercrafts.

There were discussions in Russia for this purpose at that time.

Lastly, while assessing combat aircraft, the Bolivian Air Force had previously considered the advanced trainer/light attack aircraft, the Yakovlev Yak-130.

Similarly, there were negotiations to acquire Mi-17V-5 helicopters, as confirmed by the Russian state corporation Rosoboronexport.
