Bitcoin’s Wild Ride: Nears $89K Before Pullback Amid Market Uncertainty
The cryptocurrency market saw sharp volatility on March 4 and 5, 2025, driven by geopolitical shifts and profit-taking after a rally sparked by President Donald Trump’s announcement of a U.S. Strategic Crypto Reserve.
Bitcoin (BTC) led the market turbulence, trading at $87,091 early Wednesday after rebounding from a low of $78,200. The global crypto market cap rose 4.08% to $2.86 trillion, reflecting cautious optimism.
Trump’s announcement initially fueled a surge across major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum (ETH), XRP, Solana (SOL), and Cardano (ADA). XRP soared over 34%, briefly touching $2.49, while ADA jumped 50% before crashing 19.73% amid profit-taking.
Solana also surged 25.5% but later reversed gains, trading at $141.33. Analysts attributed these corrections to traders locking in profits and broader economic uncertainty stemming from Trump’s tariff threats on Canada, Mexico, and China.
Bitcoin’s trading volume spiked 45% to $25 billion within hours of the announcement, signaling heightened investor interest despite the volatility. Ethereum followed suit with a modest 0.36% gain to $2,175, supported by ETF inflows of $21.7 million into FETH.
However, ETHA saw outflows of $26.3 million, reflecting mixed sentiment among institutional investors. Market makers highlighted the sensitivity of crypto assets to political developments.
Market Analysis
Edul Patel of Mudrex noted that Bitcoin’s resistance at $90,000 could limit further gains in the short term. Meanwhile, options markets showed increased bullish sentiment as BTC’s call/put ratio climbed 20%.
Technical indicators painted a mixed picture. Bitcoin’s Relative Strength Index (RSI) hit 72, signaling overbought conditions and potential pullbacks. Conversely, Ethereum’s Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) suggested continued upward momentum.
Altcoins mirrored Bitcoin’s volatility but showed pockets of resilience. AAVE gained 22%, while Solana faced resistance near $170. Analysts warned that SOL’s inability to sustain gains above key levels could lead to further declines toward $140.
With Trump’s Crypto Summit scheduled for March 7, traders anticipate more volatility as regulatory clarity remains elusive. While the Strategic Reserve announcement initially boosted sentiment, sustained price stability may depend on clearer policy frameworks addressing crypto adoption and tariffs’ economic impact.
