Argentine Savers Turn to Gold as Peso Instability and Policy Shifts Redefine Safe Havens
Argentine savers are turning to gold as their traditional faith in the US dollar faces new pressures. Official data and government statements reveal a dramatic shift in how Argentines protect their wealth.
For decades, chronic inflation and repeated currency crises led households and businesses to store savings in dollars, often outside the formal financial system.
The country’s central bank holds nearly two million troy ounces of gold, valued at about $4.5 billion, but recent government moves have seen some of these reserves transferred abroad to serve as collateral for international loans.
In 2025, President Javier Milei’s administration introduced major economic reforms. These included easing currency controls, moving toward a managed float of the peso, and promising to close the central bank to enable free currency competition.
The peso experienced a sharp devaluation, with the official rate jumping from 800 to 908 per US dollar overnight. Inflation, which reached 211% in 2023, is now projected to fall below 30% by year-end, thanks to strict fiscal rules and a halt to money printing.
At the same time, gold demand has risen. Argentines can now buy gold in pesos, even through installment plans, without needing dollars.
This has made gold more accessible to ordinary savers. Mining exports, driven by higher gold and silver prices, are expected to reach $4.3 billion in 2024.
A major new mining discovery in the Andes could further boost gold’s role in the economy. This shift matters because it signals a deeper change in how Argentines view risk and value.
As the government retools monetary policy and promotes investment, gold has become a practical hedge against both inflation and uncertainty, reflecting a broader search for stability in a volatile environment.
