Key Facts

Real decline. Argentina’s real minimum wage has fallen approximately 40% since Javier Milei took office in December 2023.

Historic low. Current purchasing power is worse than during the 2001 crisis and 66.5% below its September 2011 peak.

Bread and beef. A kilo of bread now costs 2.5 hours of minimum-wage work, up from one hour in 2016; ground beef requires nearly six hours.

Nominal vs. real. Decree-driven nominal increases have pushed the minimum wage above ARS 340,000, but inflation above 250% annually has erased real gains.

Poverty link. The wage collapse contributed to poverty rates spiking above 50% in the first half of Milei’s term.

Argentina’s minimum wage has lost roughly 40% of its purchasing power since President Javier Milei took office, leaving registered workers able to buy only six of every ten goods they could afford in late 2023.

What the Buenos Aires Herald and university data show

A study by the Instituto Interdisciplinario de Economía Política (IIEP) of the University of Buenos Aires, analysed by the Buenos Aires Herald’s sister outlet the Buenos Aires Times, found the real minimum wage fell 39.7% between November 2023 and May 2026.

The Centro de Investigación y Formación de la República Argentina (CIFRA) reached a similar conclusion, reporting a loss of more than 40% of purchasing power for the Salario Mínimo, Vital y Móvil since Milei assumed the presidency.

The current real minimum wage sits below levels recorded during the 2001 crisis that preceded Argentina’s convertibility collapse, and is roughly 60% lower than in 2015.

The gap between nominal hikes and real erosion

The Milei administration has raised the nominal minimum wage multiple times by decree, pushing it from ARS 156,000 (roughly US$190 at the parallel exchange rate of the time) in early 2024 to above ARS 340,000 by 2026.

Yet annual inflation exceeding 250% during the early adjustment period meant these increases never caught up with the cost of living, leaving real wages deeply negative.

The dynamic reflects a deliberate policy choice: rapid price liberalisation and the removal of subsidies were designed to correct fiscal imbalances, but the immediate cost fell heavily on wage earners.

What a collapsed Argentina minimum wage means in everyday terms

In June 2016, one hour of minimum-wage work bought one kilogramme of bread; today it takes 2.5 hours to purchase that same kilo.

For a kilogramme of ground beef, a staple of the Argentine diet, a minimum-wage worker now needs nearly six hours of labour, compared with two hours a decade ago.

These figures translate into a sharp compression of household budgets, particularly for the roughly 6.3 million registered private-sector workers whose wages are benchmarked to the minimum.

The broader social and poverty picture

The minimum-wage collapse is part of a wider erosion of household purchasing power that pushed poverty above 50% in the first half of Milei‘s term, according to official data.

Real wages across private, public, and informal sectors contracted heavily in 2023 and early 2024, even before the full impact of subsidy cuts and price liberalisation was felt.

Average household capacity to buy the basic basket had already fallen roughly 24% between 2016 and 2024, meaning Milei’s adjustment deepened a pre-existing trend rather than creating it from scratch.

The investor and expat read-through

For foreign investors and expats holding hard currency, the collapse in local purchasing power has made Argentina extraordinarily cheap in dollar terms, fuelling a boom in tourism and real estate interest in Buenos Aires.

But the same dynamic raises medium-term risks: a population squeezed to 2001-era consumption levels creates political pressure that could force policy reversals, particularly ahead of midterm elections.

The government’s bet is that stabilisation will eventually lift real wages as inflation cools, but the data so far shows the recovery in purchasing power has been slow and uneven.

What to watch next

The Milei administration faces a delicate balancing act: maintaining fiscal discipline while responding to growing social pressure over wages that have fallen to historic lows.

Any further decree-driven minimum-wage increases will be closely watched against monthly inflation prints to gauge whether real wages are finally stabilising or continuing their decline.

For markets, the key signal will be whether poverty and wage data begin to improve before the electoral cycle intensifies, or whether the social cost of adjustment becomes the dominant political narrative.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much has Argentina’s minimum wage fallen under Milei?

The real minimum wage has dropped roughly 40% since Javier Milei took office in December 2023, according to studies by the University of Buenos Aires and the CIFRA research centre. This means a minimum-wage worker can now buy only about 60% of what they could in late 2023.

Why has Argentina’s minimum wage lost value despite nominal increases?

The government has raised the nominal minimum wage multiple times by decree, but annual inflation exceeding 250% during the early adjustment period meant these hikes never kept pace with the cost of living. Rapid price liberalisation and subsidy cuts further eroded real purchasing power.

How does Argentina’s current minimum wage compare to past crises?

Today’s real minimum wage is worse than during the 2001 crisis that preceded Argentina’s convertibility collapse, and sits 66.5% below its September 2011 peak. It is also roughly 60% lower than in 2015 and about 20% below 1990s levels.
