US Cancels G20 Photo Over Russia Row

The United States has cancelled the traditional group photo at the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta after European diplomats refused to stand beside Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov. The row over Moscow’s seat at the table has now spilled into the talks themselves, which we follow in our G20 foreign ministers Atlanta coverage.

Key Facts

  • What happened: The US scrapped the G20 foreign ministers’ group photo after European officials objected to posing with Lavrov.
  • Where and when: The two-day talks of the world’s 20 major economies opened in Atlanta on Friday, 30 October 2026.
  • Who is missing: South Africa, a G20 member, and Ukraine were not invited to the Atlanta meeting.
  • What next: The leaders’ summit follows in Miami in December 2026.

Why the Group Photo Was Scrapped

The group photo is a routine ritual of G20 meetings, and this year the United States dropped it. European diplomats had objected to being pictured with Lavrov and threatened to walk out, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the host, cancelled it.

Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, called the cancellation "the right decision." He told reporters: "I am not the only one who does not want to be photographed with Lavrov."

What Rubio and Europe Said

Rubio opened the meeting with a call for unity. "We are in a critical moment — I would call it a moment of choosing," he told the ministers, and he spoke of a series of interconnected economic and geopolitical crises.Germany’s Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, struck a firm but open tone. "There is no normality with Russia," he said, but "we must exchange the controversies at the table here."

The Divisions Behind the Photo

The photo dispute is a small symbol of a larger split. The ministers disagree on the war in Ukraine, on the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, on US tariffs and on disputes in the South China Sea.

The guest list shows the same tension. South Africa, a G20 member, was not invited, and Pretoria says its absence is not voluntary, while Ukraine, which is not a member, was also left out.

The G20 in Plain English

The G20 is a forum of 19 countries plus the European Union and the African Union, which together account for most of the world’s economic output. Foreign ministers meet before each leaders’ summit to agree the agenda and, if possible, a shared text.

Lavrov has led Russian diplomacy since 2004, so he is a fixture at these meetings. Many European governments have limited their contact with Russian ministers since the invasion of Ukraine, which is why a shared photograph became a problem.

What It Means for US Readers

The Atlanta meeting prepares the G20 leaders’ summit that the United States will host in Miami in December 2026. If the host cannot stage a simple photograph, a joint statement on Ukraine, trade or Iran will be harder to reach.

For Americans the practical effect shows up in tariffs, energy prices and sanctions, all of which the G20 discusses but cannot settle by itself. Local transport authorities have also announced road closures around the Midtown Atlanta venue, the Loews Atlanta Hotel, from late Thursday until noon on Sunday, 1 November.

What Is Not Known

It is not yet clear whether the ministers will agree on any joint statement when the talks end on Saturday, 31 October. Nor is it known whether the photo row will change who sits where in the remaining sessions.

The level of China’s delegation and the full list of attending ministers were not confirmed when we published. We will update the hub if they change the picture.
