Key Facts

  • Who: Australia’s Penny Wong and South Korea’s Cho Hyun are the latest foreign ministers to confirm a trip to Atlanta.
  • When: Friday and Saturday, October 30–31, 2026; Atlanta street closures start at midnight on Thursday.
  • Agenda: The State Department lists sea lanes, energy and food security and supply chains.
  • Next fixed date: The G20 leaders’ summit is scheduled for December 14–15 in Miami.

Asian and Pacific diplomats are heading to Atlanta, where the United States hosts the world’s biggest economies for two days of talks. Australia and South Korea confirmed on October 29 that their foreign ministers are going, adding to the G20 foreign ministers Atlanta line-up that already includes India and Russia.

The G20 is the group of 20 large economies that together produce most of the world’s output. The gathering matters to US readers because it sets the agenda for the leaders’ summit that President Donald Trump hosts in December.

Why Australia’s Trip Matters

Australia’s foreign ministry said on October 29 that Foreign Minister Penny Wong will attend both the G20 meeting and a meeting of the Quad. The Quad is a group of four democracies: the United States, India, Japan and Australia.

Wong’s office says it is the third Quad foreign ministers’ meeting of 2026, with her counterparts from the US, India and Japan. Australia has also joined a European Union-led pledge, called “No Fees/No Tolls”, that opposes what it calls unlawful fees and tolls on shipping that undermine freedom of navigation.

Seoul Sends Its Foreign Minister

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said Foreign Minister Cho Hyun left for the United States on October 29. He plans to attend the Atlanta meeting and to meet Rubio on the Korean Peninsula, including North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s recent visit to China.

Cho is due to stay in the United States through Monday, November 2. South Korea is set to take over the G20 presidency in 2028, which gives Seoul a long-term interest in how Washington runs the forum this year.

What Washington Says It Wants

The State Department, the US foreign ministry, says the talks will address geopolitical crises that are feeding global economic shocks. Its stated priorities include freedom of navigation, energy security, food security and resilient supply chains.

The department says the ministerial will help prepare the agenda for the leaders’ summit in Miami. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, America’s top diplomat, chairs the Atlanta meeting.

What To Watch in Atlanta

The city of Atlanta says street closures begin at midnight on Thursday, October 29, Eastern time, and run until noon on Sunday, November 1. They centre on Juniper, 11th and 12th Streets in Atlanta’s Midtown district, with intermittent closures on Peachtree Street and extra security screening.

Visitors and commuters in Midtown should expect detours on Friday and Saturday. The State Department has not published an opening time for the talks or named the venue.

South Africa’s Absence

South Africa, the only African country in the G20 and last year’s chair, is not part of the process this year. President Trump said in November 2025 that South Africa would not be invited to the 2026 G20 events.

That gap is one of the political stories to follow, since the African Union also holds a G20 seat of its own.

What It Means for You

For readers in the United States, the meeting shows who Washington can bring to the table on shipping security and energy supply, two issues that feed straight into fuel and food prices. Outcomes will be modest: foreign ministers’ meetings rarely end in binding deals, and the real decisions are left to the December summit.

What Is Not Known

No complete attendance list, opening time or venue has been published by the State Department. It is also unclear whether a joint statement will be issued, since no communiqué has been announced.
