UBS Finds Brazilian Assets Attractive After Recent Market Drops

With $1.6 trillion under management, UBS Asset Management identifies a prime investment opportunity in Brazil’s economic downturn.

The firm, guided by insights into fiscal risks that recently shocked Brazilian markets, views these assets as ripe for investment.

Shamaila Khan, who heads emerging markets at UBS in New York, shared an optimistic perspective with Bloomberg News.

Nevertheless, Khan remained discreet about specific strategies, hinting only that these fiscal risks are already priced into the assets.

The local markets have experienced volatility, driven by concerns over the stability of public finances.

Speaking in Rio, President Lula stated that higher tax revenues and lower interest rates should reduce the deficit without cutting public investments.

Observers interpreted this as possibly leading to unchecked government spending.

Market sentiments dived when Finance Minister Fernando Haddad’s private comments on fiscal stability became public.

This caused future interest rates to rise sharply by up to 60 basis points in a day.

UBS Finds Brazilian Assets Attractive After Recent Market Drops

Concurrently, the Brazilian Real has depreciated by 10% this year, making it the weakest among major currencies.

Medium and long-term future interest rates climbed about 200 basis points. By last Wednesday, the Ibovespa, Brazil’s main stock index, had fallen 10.6%.

Khan also pointed out that recent economic worries in Mexico have compounded risk premiums in Brazilian markets.

Furthermore, she suggested that Brazilian assets could recover due to anticipated Federal Reserve rate cuts later this year.

Market operators in the U.S. are preparing for these decreases to start in September.

This situation highlights the strategic moves of major financial entities during Brazil’s economic shifts.

It highlights the interconnected global market and central fiscal and monetary policies shaping investments.

These changes impact local investors and the broader global financial community.
