Truckers’ Blockade Disrupts Colombia-Ecuador Border

A blockade initiated by Colombian freight transporters at Rumichaca Bridge, marking the Colombia-Ecuador boundary, has surpassed 24 hours.

These truckers demand economic guarantees from President Gustavo Petro’s administration.

At the heart of their grievances are rising diesel costs, steep toll fees, and unchecked illegal freight from Ecuador.

Issues also include frequent stoppages in the Cauca area, highway safety concerns, and deteriorating infrastructure.

The Colombian Truckers Association (ACC) from Nariño claims involvement of about 2,500 vehicles.

Their resolve is firm, with a spokesperson asserting, “We will remain until our demands are met.”

This protest has disrupted the flow of goods, triggering fuel shortages locally. Media reports highlight the growing desperation for solutions.

In negotiations, the truckers have voiced their problems but report little progress.

They insist on a senior government commission to engage at the protest site. This would potentially catalyze decisions to lift the indefinite roadblocks.

Currently, Deputy Minister of Transport, Eduardo Enríquez Caicedo, is the sole central government representative addressing the situation.

Meanwhile, regional authorities strategize at the Unified Command Post (PUM), deploying security forces to safeguard border commuters.

Temporary allowances have been made for certain vehicles, mainly tourist buses. However, many travelers find themselves rerouted due to the ongoing blockade.

This standstill at the border is not an isolated event. Just last week, the Nariño regional ACC declared ongoing readiness to protest, although promising to keep roads open.
