Teófilo Gutiérrez, the Colombian striker known as Teo, retires with a farewell match in Barranquilla on Saturday, 19 December 2026. The event, called The Last Dance, starts at 5:00 p.m. at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez.

For US fans of Colombian football, it is a rare chance to see a 2014 World Cup forward say goodbye. Tickets are on sale through TuBoleta, the official seller, from about US$32 including fees.

The start time also equals 5:00 p.m. US Eastern, because Colombia stays on UTC minus five all year. Barranquilla, the capital of Atlántico department on the Caribbean coast, is home to Junior, the club where Gutiérrez began.

Who Teófilo Gutiérrez Is

Gutiérrez, 41, made his professional debut in 2007 with Junior, Barranquilla’s club in Colombia’s top division. He has also played for River Plate, Racing, Sporting Lisbon, Cruz Azul, Trabzonspor and Deportivo Cali.

With River Plate, the Buenos Aires club, he won the 2014 Copa Sudamericana, South America’s second club competition. That year he was also named Rey de América, an award for the best player on the continent.

The farewell’s Spanish title, El último baile del Rey de América, means the last dance of the King of America. For Colombia he scored 15 senior international goals, including one against Greece at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

He is playing his final months with Junior in the second half of the 2026 Colombian season. El Colombiano, the Medellín daily, wrote that he hopes to win one more league title before he stops.

What the Farewell Includes

Gutiérrez announced the date in a social media video, and ticket presales opened on Saturday, 1 August. “There will not only be football, but also a show, singers and lots of family,” he said, El Colombiano reported.

TuBoleta’s listing describes a tribute match with national and international football figures, followed by a farewell concert with guest artists. It also promises family activities, brand activations and entertainment around the game.

In September, Gutiérrez said three international singers would perform and that River Plate would come, NTN24, the Bogotá news channel, reported. Neither the singers nor the guest players had been named by 15 October.

TuBoleta lists Agencia Hero Consulting & Development, a Colombian company, as the party responsible for the event. The stadium, which hosted Colombia’s recent World Cup qualifiers, is being renovated before the Copa Sudamericana final.

Tickets and Prices

TuBoleta sells eight sections across the west, east, north and south stands, all with numbered seats. The prices below include its service fee and use COP 3,183 per US dollar, the open.er-api.com rate for 15 October.

  • West upper (Occidental Alta): COP 195,500 (about US$61)
  • West lower (Occidental Baja): COP 176,900 (about US$56)
  • East lower (Oriental Baja): COP 158,300 (about US$50)
  • East upper (Oriental Alta): COP 149,000 (about US$47)
  • North and south upper (Norte and Sur Alta): COP 111,800 (about US$35)
  • North and south lower (Norte and Sur Baja): COP 102,500 (about US$32)

On 15 October, the event page showed a single checkout button for Colombian-issued cards, labelled “Tarjeta nacional.” Some other TuBoleta events add a button for international cards, so US buyers should try checkout early.

TuBoleta runs a call centre on (60-1) 593-6300 and lists physical sales points on its website. Buy only from TuBoleta’s own site or outlets, and avoid resellers on social media.

Children must be at least 5 in the east and west stands and at least 12 in the north and south stands. Noticias RCN quoted later full prices of up to COP 230,000 (about US$72) in August, so prices may rise.

Getting to the Estadio Metropolitano

Barranquilla is served by Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport, in the neighbouring municipality of Soledad. On Saturday, 3 October, Colombian officials announced a direct route to New York, without naming the airline or a start date.

Routes change by season, so check the airlines for nonstop or one-stop options from your US city. The match falls six days before Christmas, a peak week for flights to Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

Inside the city, the State Department advises against taxis hailed on the street and recommends dispatch services or ride apps. With gates opening at 2:00 p.m., plan to arrive early to avoid queues and traffic around the stadium.

Barranquilla is hot all year, so wear sun protection for the afternoon gates and drink water. The event ends after dark, so arrange your ride back to the hotel before you go in.

Entry Rules and Safety for US Visitors

US citizens need no visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days, the State Department says. Travellers must complete the free Check-MIG form of Migración Colombia, the immigration agency, between 1 and 72 hours before the flight.

Your passport must be valid for the whole stay, and six months of validity is recommended. Colombia may deny entry to travellers without a return ticket, so keep proof of onward travel handy.

The State Department rates Colombia at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and natural disasters. Atlántico, the department around Barranquilla, is not among the areas listed at Level 4.

It warns that criminals use dating apps to lure victims and that many US citizens have been drugged and robbed. It also advises visitors to avoid street ATMs and never to leave drinks unattended.

The US government runs a consular agency in Barranquilla, at the Centro Empresarial Las Américas on Calle 77B. Its main telephone numbers are +57-605-353-2001 and +57-605-369-0149.

What It Means for You

If you follow Colombian or Argentine football, this is a one-off chance to see Gutiérrez and former teammates in one stadium. Tickets cost less than many US sports events, from about US$32 including fees.

If you plan a December trip to the Caribbean coast, the match can anchor a few days in Barranquilla before Christmas. Cartagena is about two hours away by road, and Cali’s salsa fair traditionally opens on 25 December.

What Is Not Known

The organisers have not named the guest players, the line-ups or the three international singers. Whether River Plate means the current squad, former players or club officials is also unclear.

In September, Gutiérrez posted a 2012 photo with Lionel Messi captioned “No te lo pierdas,” or “Don’t miss it,” Publimetro reported. The Colombian daily noted that nothing publicly confirms Messi will take part in the farewell.

No US broadcast or streaming deal has been announced, and the running order of the evening is not public. The organisers have not said whether the stadium renovation will change seating before 19 December.

What Comes Next

Gutiérrez finishes the second half of the 2026 season with Junior before the farewell on Saturday, 19 December. Barranquilla is also scheduled to host the Copa Sudamericana final on Saturday, 21 November.

Watch Gutiérrez’s social media and the TuBoleta event page for guest names and the concert line-up. Ticket holders should check the page again in the week before the match for any changes.
