Tariff Threats Hit Mexico’s IPC as Technical Signals Confirm Market Caution
Mexico’s main stock market, the S&P/BMV IPC, fell 0.73% to 57,395.85 at the close of July 30, 2025, as official trading data and charts confirmed.
This drop follows renewed threats by the U.S. administration to impose tariffs on Mexican imports, stoking risk aversion across export-driven sectors.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum tried to offer reassurance by maintaining confidence in a negotiated solution but kept a clear line on national sovereignty.
The Bank of Mexico, responding to persistent inflation, has paused further deep rate cuts after easing by 325 basis points since 2024, now favoring a more cautious stance.
Over this period, the biggest losers included Grupo México, which fell 3.51% as commodity-linked shares slid on the news and sector rotation. Banorte lost 1.15%, and Alfa shed 1.23%, reflecting broad caution across industrials and financials.

Meanwhile, select defensives managed modest gains. Weekly gainers earlier in July included Alsea, Cuervo, and Televisa, boosted by earnings, but the last 24-hour window largely featured red ink.
Compared to major benchmarks, Mexico lagged its U.S. and Asian peers, which held stable as investors awaited central bank announcements rather than reacting to direct tariffs.
European stocks remained wary, with global liquidity indicators like the NDQ Global Liquidity Index (yellow line on the chart) showing a sharp drop during the session, signaling funding constraints and heightened risk-off flows.
A thorough technical analysis of the attached daily and four-hour charts highlighted failed attempts by the IPC to re-enter the 58,000 territory.
Price ran into resistance near the upper Bollinger Band, then reversed with rising volume, confirming distribution rather than accumulation. The MACD crossed bearishly, with its signal line rolling over on both timeframes, a recognized sell signal.
The RSI slipped from recent highs, holding the mid-fifties on the daily but are flattening, showing neither clear strength nor deep oversold conditions.
Major support sits at the 200-period moving average, which buyers managed to defend during intraday tests. The charts reflect a market in consolidation, where rallies fail to produce follow-through, and selling pressure appears on every approach toward resistance.
The weekly perspective shows that while the index remains higher year-on-year, it has lost almost 1% over the last month and recently came off all-time highs set in May.
ETF flows and volumes remained muted overnight. No substantial inflows emerged ahead of the market open, supporting the evidence of institutional caution. On fundamentals, the outlook remains clouded by policy risk, not by weak earnings or economic contraction.
Overall, the IPC reflects the classic symptoms of a market facing external shocks: orderly, risk-off selling, flight to defensives, and technical breakdown at key resistance, all happening under tighter global liquidity.
