Swahili Fashion Week, East Africa’s long-running runway and design festival, returns to Dar es Salaam from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December 2026, and tickets are on sale. This guide covers what is confirmed, what is not, and how a US visitor gets there.

The organiser calls the 2026 event its 19th year and says it is one of the biggest annual fashion events in Africa. Two details that a traveller needs, the venue and the ticket prices, are still missing from the festival’s own pages.

What Swahili Fashion Week Is and Why It Matters

Swahili Fashion Week was founded in 2008 by the Pan-African couturier Mustafa Hassanali, according to the festival’s own site. It gives designers from Swahili-speaking countries, the region around Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, a stage to show work and meet buyers.

The organisers frame fashion as a business as well as an art, with the aim of taking African designers into the global industry. The festival’s forum is organised by the Fashion Association of Tanzania, the industry body, together with 361 Degrees Africa, a fashion and events group.

For US readers the draw is a rare chance to see East African design in person, and to meet designers whose labels sell abroad. Buyers, stylists and members of the African diaspora are the natural audience.

The Schedule

The organiser lists the main event for 4 to 6 December 2026, which runs Friday to Sunday. Dar es Salaam is on East Africa Time, three hours ahead of Greenwich time all year, so it is 8 hours ahead of New York and 11 hours ahead of Los Angeles in December.

The official runway schedule says only that it is coming soon, so show times and the designer line-up by night are not yet published. The festival’s site already lists more than 30 Tanzanian designers and six international ones, including a label from Kampala, Uganda.

A Pop Up Shop opens to the public on Saturday 14 November 2026 from 12 noon to 8 p.m., and the organiser describes it as a one-day retail space. Its location is still to be confirmed, and it aims to connect designers with business, diplomatic and expatriate communities.

The Tanzania Fashion Forum, a business conference under the same banner, was listed for Tuesday 27 October 2026 in Dar es Salaam, and the organiser’s page does not yet report how it went. The Embassy of Italy in Dar es Salaam supported it, according to the organiser.

Tickets

The festival’s ticket page says tickets are available now at selected physical outlets and online. The page does not list prices or ticket types, so we do not quote any.

Buy only through the festival’s own site, swahilifashionweek.com, and keep the confirmation. If you cannot see prices at checkout, ask the organiser at [email protected] before paying.

Getting to Dar es Salaam From the US

US citizens need a Tanzanian tourist visa, which costs US$100 for a one-year multiple-entry permit, according to the immigration service fee list. You can apply for an e-visa online before travel or buy a visa on arrival.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months and have a blank page. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you arrive from a country with the disease, including after a layover of 12 hours or more.

Since 1 October 2026, Tanzania also requires mandatory travel insurance for visitors to the mainland, which costs about US$44. Check the current rule with your airline or the immigration service before you fly.

Most US travellers will connect through a hub in Europe, the Gulf or elsewhere in Africa, so check routes and times with the airlines. The city’s airport is Julius Nyerere International Airport, and getting around at night is easiest by taxi or ride-hailing app, as in our Dar es Salaam events guide.

Safety and Costs

Reports say the State Department lowered its Tanzania advisory to Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, on 16 October 2026. Read the current advisory on the State Department site and enrol in the embassy’s alert programme before you book.

December is hot and humid on the coast, so plan indoor evenings and carry water. Use cards and cash sparingly in crowded places and keep valuables out of sight.

Add a few days in Zanzibar if you can, where our guide to Sauti za Busara shows the island’s biggest music festival. Fashion fans can also compare Kenya Fashion Week in Nairobi on 22 November.

What It Means for You

This is a niche cultural event rather than a mega festival, so plan it as part of a longer East Africa trip. Tickets are open, but you cannot yet price the evening or choose a hotel by the venue.

Wait for the venue and the runway schedule before you book flights, and check the visa and insurance rules. Our Tanzania coverage follows travel and security news.

What Is Not Known

The organiser has not published the 2026 venue, ticket prices, show times or the nightly line-up. Rely on the festival’s own dates of 4 to 6 December.

The location of the Pop Up Shop is also unconfirmed. We will update this guide when the organiser publishes the schedule.
