São Paulo’s Winless Streak Continues with Cruzeiro Draw

São Paulo FC extended their winless run in the Brazilian Championship to three matches after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Cruzeiro at Morumbis Stadium on Sunday.

Fans expressed their frustration through loud boos as the final whistle blew. Ferreirinha gave the home side hope when he headed in Cédric Soares’ cross in the 52nd minute.

The lead lasted only 12 minutes before Kaio Jorge equalized for Cruzeiro, tapping in from close range after Kaiki’s headed assist from a Matheus Pereira corner. The draw leaves São Paulo in 15th place with just three points from three matches.

Cruzeiro sits slightly higher in 12th position with four points but extends their own winless streak to four games across all competitions. São Paulo started the match cautiously.

André Silva created an early chance with a clever backheel to Luciano, whose shot from the edge of the area narrowly missed the target. Ferreirinha threatened again in the 27th minute but sent his effort into the side netting.

Cruzeiro showed attacking intent throughout the first half. Kaio Jorge tested goalkeeper Rafael early, while Wanderson fired over the bar shortly before halftime.

The visitors nearly equalized immediately after São Paulo’s goal when Villalba’s header struck the crossbar in the 59th minute. The second half became increasingly tense after Cruzeiro’s equalizer.

São Paulo pushed forward desperately seeking a winner but left themselves vulnerable to counterattacks. Neither team created clear opportunities in the final minutes as the match settled into a midfield battle.

São Paulo coach Luis Zubeldía, serving a touchline suspension, now faces mounting pressure to deliver results. His team must regroup quickly before traveling to face Botafogo on Wednesday evening.

Cruzeiro returns home to face Bahia on Thursday night at Mineirão Stadium. Coach Leonardo Jardim will take encouragement from his team’s resilient away performance but needs to end their winless run soon.

Both clubs entered the season with higher ambitions and must improve quickly to avoid falling further behind in Brazil’s fiercely competitive top division.
