São Paulo Carnival 2025 Injects R$3.4 Billion into Local Economy

The São Paulo City Hall released official figures this Monday showing the 2025 Carnival generated R$3.4 billion ($567 million) for the local economy.

SPTuris, the municipal tourism company that organized the events, reported a record-breaking 16.5 million participants attended the festivities across three weekends of celebration and parades.

The economic powerhouse event created 50,000 direct and indirect jobs throughout the city. SPTuris highlighted a significant 73.7% increase in tourists for the street carnival compared to last year.

The surge in visitors contributed substantially to the economic impact through spending on accommodations, food, and entertainment. Beverage giant Ambev invested R$27.8 million ($4.63 million) in São Paulo‘s street Carnival, covering nearly 66% of the city’s total festival budget.

The company sponsored numerous street blocks and supported thousands of street vendors, connecting directly with consumers during the celebrations. Public services demonstrated remarkable efficiency during the massive event.

Cleaning crews collected 645,000 tons of waste from street blocks, with 140,000 tons directed to recycling facilities. The average cleaning time after blocks passed through areas was just 40 minutes.

São Paulo’s Carnival 2025

The transportation system handled 35 million bus trips during the festivities. This included 20.8 million during the five main Carnival days and 8.9 million free trips on Sundays. About 55,000 of the 220,000 Anhembi Sambadrome spectators arrived via specially arranged bus services.

Security measures showed substantial improvement this year. Authorities recorded 828 cell phone robberies between February 28 and March 4, down from nearly 1,300 incidents during last year’s celebration. Cell phone thefts also decreased from 2,255 to 1,700 cases.

The economic success extends beyond São Paulo. The National Confederation of Trade estimated Carnival 2025 generated R$12.03 billion ($2 billion) nationwide. Bars and restaurants contributed the largest share with projected turnover of R$5.4 billion ($900 million).

São Paulo’s Carnival received a 99% approval rating from attendees according to a Datafolha survey. The festival continues to cement its status as a crucial driver of Brazil’s economy, creating jobs and boosting tourism while celebrating the country’s rich cultural heritage.
