Saco de Mamanguá in Paraty: World’s Only Tropical Fjord Is in State of Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A fjord is a large sea inlet surrounded by high rocky mountains. Such landscapes are common in Scandinavian countries Denmark and Norway, but not limited to them. Here in Brazil it is possible to see one, and only one, instance of this phenomenon.

In the southwest part of Rio de Janeiro state, in the municipality of Paraty, the only tropical fjord in the world is located: Saco de Mamanguá. It is deemed such even though it is not surrounded by snowy mountains, like those found in the north of the planet, but rather the incredible biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest.

The green sea encroaches upon the continent for 8km. The Saco do Mamanguá bathes an enormous environmental reserve that can only be accessed by trails or non-motorized boats. The protected region also includes ten rivers, 30 beaches and dozens of waterfalls hidden among the forests.

There are several species of turtles, fish, seahorses and dolphins. However, the major attraction only comes out after dark, with total absence of light. The planktons present in the water, when stirred, glow fluorescent like aquatic fireflies.

The success of the site’s preservation is due to the efforts of the inhabitants of the ‘caiçara’ communities, the only inhabitants in the region, and environmentalists. As a result, there are few accommodation options, boiling down to just a few ecological inns and campsites.

One of the most popular tours for those visiting the only tropical fjord in the world is the Sugar Loaf trail. A steep ascent, yet with very little risk, leads to the top of the 420 meters high peak, offering a privileged view of Saco de Mamanguá.

To get to this Atlantic Forest refuge the best way is to drive to the village of Paraty-Mirim and, from there, grab a boat to the spot.
