Petrópolis Recovery Shakes Up Beer Industry Dynamics in Brazil
The Brazilian beer market is witnessing a shift in dynamics. Ambev and Heineken, two major players, experienced modest growth of less than 1% in the third quarter of 2024.
Meanwhile, Grupo Petrópolis, which filed for bankruptcy protection last year, has significantly increased its production. Market analysts have noted Petrópolis‘ role in boosting beer production in August.
The company is now utilizing about 50% of its production capacity. This surge has intensified competition in the beer industry, particularly affecting Ambev’s performance.
Ambev’s beer sales in Brazil reached R$ 9.88 billion ($1.73 billion), a 3.5% increase. This growth reflects a 2.9% rise in revenue per hectoliter, while volume grew by 0.6% compared to the previous year.
However, analysts consider this performance weak. The company’s core segment, including brands like Skol, Brahma, and Antarctica, faced challenges.
Skol’s poor performance offset double-digit growth from Brahma and Antarctica. Ambev’s CEO, Jean Jereissati, attributed this to a strategic price adjustment in September.
Brazil’s Competitive Beer Market
Ambev’s premium segment showed better results. Brands like Stella Artois, Spaten, and Corona contributed to a 2.9% increase in revenue per hectoliter. This aligns with the company’s focus on the premium market.
Heineken also reported modest growth, with a 0.7% increase in total beer volume. The company’s premium segment performed well, particularly in Brazil.
However, Heineken faced challenges in other regions, with volume declines in the Americas and Asia-Pacific. The beer market in Brazil remains competitive.
Ambev‘s CFO, Lucas Lira, emphasized that competition has always been a factor in the Brazilian market. He stated that brand performance varies over time, with stronger brands compensating for weaker ones.
Analysts suggest that Ambev and Heineken’s focus on the premium market could benefit Petrópolis in the mass market segment. However, Ambev has indicated it won’t cede ground in the core segment, which still accounts for most beer volumes in Brazil.
As Petrópolis continues to recover and increase production, it may pose a growing challenge to Ambev and Heineken in the mass market.
Both companies will need to balance their premium market strategies with maintaining their positions in the core segment. The current market situation suggests continued growth in beer consumption in Brazil.
This trend could benefit all players, especially in the premium segment. However, the increased competition may lead to further market share shifts in the coming months.
