Peso Hovers Near 18 As Year-End Flows Test Mexico’s Market Rally

Key Points

  • USD/MXN is stuck near 18.00 as year-end flows meet Fed-minutes risk.
  • Mexico’s IPC slipped from record highs on profit-taking, but the broader trend still points up.
  • A weak 2025 dollar supports the peso, while 2026 rate expectations raise short-term volatility.

Mexico’s peso is ending 2025 in a narrow range, but the calm feels fragile. By early Tuesday, USD/MXN was around 17.98, after printing roughly 17.97–18.00 in the latest thin session.

The bigger backdrop is dollar softness. The dollar index was near 98.0 and is set for about a 9.6% annual drop, its steepest in eight years.

Markets are waiting for the Fed’s December minutes for signs of how split officials are about the 2026 path. Traders are pricing two cuts next year. MUFG expects three cuts, one per quarter through Q3, and projects the index could fall another 5% in 2026.

In Mexico, traders described Monday as classic year-end positioning. Monex said the peso closed down 0.37% on the day, staying within 17.88–17.99, and estimated an overnight band of 17.92–18.01.

The technical picture matches the “bounce, not break” feel: your 4-hour chart shows RSI near 60 with MACD turning positive, while the daily RSI sits near 40.

That mix usually signals a short-term squeeze, but not a confirmed reversal. The market’s immediate line remains 18.00. Equities told a parallel story. The S&P/BMV IPC fell 0.44% to 65,347.08, snapping a six-session winning streak after Friday’s record close.

Banco Base’s Gabriela Siller said “low volume” stood out, with turnover about 53% below the 100-day average. Total volume reached 109.1 million shares, worth 12.069 billion pesos ($672 million).

Top winners included Dine B (+4.88%), Grupo Kuo B (+3.47%), CMR B (+2.80%), Qualitas (+1.73%), and América Móvil (+0.70%).

The main losers were Becle (-1.91%), Grupo México (-1.84%), GAP Centro Norte (-1.56%), La Comer (-1.19%), and Televisa (-1.14%), while some close screens also flagged Volaris down about 2.2%.

For cross-border flows, EWW, the main U.S.-listed Mexico equity ETF, shows about $1.94 billion in assets and roughly $294 million of net inflows over one year.

Money has not fled. It is pausing, and investors are still quick to reward rule-based policy and punish intervention talk.
