Peru’s National Police chief was removed from office

The Peruvian government has announced the dismissal of Raul Alfaro as general commander of the National Police after alleged links with Jorge Hernandez, alias ‘El Español’, investigated for leading a suspected espionage plot headed by former president Pedro Castillo, were revealed the day before.

The Peruvian Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered on Monday the search of Alvarado’s private home as part of an investigation to determine the links of the high police commander with ‘El Español’, according to the official newspaper ‘El Peruano’.

According to the thesis of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Alvarado and his predecessor, Alberto Vera, would have integrated an alleged criminal network dedicated to espionage and led by the Castillo, as reported by the Andean radio station RPP.

After this, the Executive considers that the general commander of the Police is immersed in a situation of “conflict of interests” that makes “incompatible” the performance of his functions at the head of the Peruvian security forces.

Following Alvarado’s dismissal, the Andean Government announced the appointment of Luis Angulo as the new commander general of the Peruvian National Police, ratifying his promotion from lieutenant general to general of arms.

Alvarado’s dismissal comes just a day after the government of President Dina Boluarte also announced the replacement of eight police generals for their management of the riots that, for several months, have been sweeping the country in search of the resignation of the president and the calling of new elections.
