Peru: constitutional complaint against former PM Betssy Chávez approved

The Peruvian Congress has approved this Wednesday a constitutional complaint against former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez for the alleged crimes of rebellion and conspiracy.

The plenary of the Congress has decided, with 66 votes in favor and 11 against, to suspend the also congresswoman “while the criminal process lasts”, as reported by the Lower House.

Chávez, during the debate, criticized the work of the Legislative Power, declaring that “it is arbitrary for the Congress to elect Presidents of the Republic over the will of the people, infringing the procedures for the presidential vacancy of the Congress’ regulations”.

In addition, the parliamentarians – with 57 votes in favor, 18 against, and ten abstentions – have decided to admit the constitutional accusation against the former Minister of the Interior, Willy Huerta, for alleged co-authorship in the alleged coup d’état of Pedro Castillo.

Thirdly, the legislators have also processed the constitutional accusation against former Minister of Commerce Roberto Sanchez.

However, they have not suspended him from his duties in Congress since the vote has registered 21 votes in favor, 39 against, and 18 abstentions.
