Oil Prices Drop Amid Rising U.S. Stockpiles and Geopolitical Tensions

Oil prices experienced a downturn, dropping over 1% due to an unexpected rise in U.S. stockpiles. This marked a halt in the previous streak of gains.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and upcoming U.S. elections remain key factors influencing the market. On Wednesday, October 23, oil prices ended lower as U.S. crude inventories increased more than anticipated.

Brent crude futures, a global benchmark for December delivery, fell by 1.42% to $74.96 per barrel on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) in London.

Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude contracts for November delivery decreased by 1.35%, settling at $70.77 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex).

The oil market weakened amid heightened risk aversion among investors and a larger-than-expected rise in U.S. crude stockpiles.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, crude inventories rose by 5.5 million barrels to a total of 426 million barrels for the week ending October 18. Analysts surveyed by Reuters had predicted a smaller increase of 270,000 barrels.

Oil prices often reflect investor sentiment as a “risk gauge,” and current market caution includes expectations of Donald Trump’s potential return to the U.S. presidency.

Additionally, the DXY index, which measures the dollar against six major currencies, reached its highest level since late July. A stronger dollar can dampen oil demand from buyers using other currencies because oil is priced in dollars.

Concerns about potential disruptions in oil supply due to Middle Eastern conflicts continue to influence market dynamics. These geopolitical issues remain significant as traders assess their impact on global oil availability and pricing.
