Mozambique Airline Plans Fleet Expansion by 2027

Mozambique Airlines (LAM) aims to double its aircraft count to 22 by 2027, says the Operations Director.

Speaking in Inhambane, he revealed plans to add three more planes this year. The goal is to meet demand by resuming services and launching new routes.

Currently, LAM has nine aircraft. The plan is to increase this number to 12 by year’s end. “We intend to add 10 more by 2027,” he stated.

Last year, LAM restarted flights to Harare and Johannesburg. Moreover, a new service from Maputo to Lisbon will resume in November.

In addition, a new route from Maputo to Cape Town will also begin this year. The Operations Director shared another development.

The airline has leased a Boeing 737 for cargo, specifically targeting South Africa. Another cargo plane will join within six months.

Theunis Crous, head of Fly Modern Ark, the managing company, disclosed a $15 million funding boost for LAM.

This will support the country’s airline’s growth strategy. Passenger numbers have risen to 57,000, up from a monthly average of 46,000.

This expansion follows years of challenges. Poor maintenance and a small fleet led to operational issues, including non-fatal incidents.
