Grenada votes in five days, and outsiders are about to watch how it goes. The Commonwealth, a group of 56 mostly former British territories, announced on October 29 that it is sending an election team, as our Grenada election coverage follows the race.
The Caribbean nation of three islands elects a new Parliament on Thursday, November 5, 2026. The contest pits Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell’s governing party, in power since 2022, against the party it replaced.
What the Commonwealth Team Will Do
The team is led by Ian Michael Anthony, the former chief elections officer of Dominica, a neighbouring Caribbean island. A team from the Commonwealth Secretariat, the group’s administrative arm, will support him, led by Lindiwe Maleleka, a political adviser in its electoral support section.
Before election day, the team will meet Grenada’s Parliamentary Elections Office, the national election authority. It will also meet political parties, candidates, civil society groups, the media and security agencies.
On Thursday, the team will watch polling stations open, voting, polls closing and the counting of ballots. Afterwards it will report to Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey, and it leaves Grenada on November 7.
Observers matter because they give voters, and losing candidates, an outside account of how a vote was run. Observers do not run the election or decide who wins; they report what they see. The Commonwealth’s announcement does not say when, or whether, the team’s report will be made public.
What Voters Decide
All 15 elected seats in the House of Representatives, the elected lower house of Parliament, are up for election. A party needs eight to govern outright.
Mitchell’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) won nine seats in 2022. Emmalin Pierre leads the New National Party (NNP), which governed before the NDC and won six.
A swing of just two seats from the NDC to the NNP would flip control of Parliament.
There are 46 candidates across the 15 constituencies. Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Grenada’s two smaller islands, vote alongside the main island. Each of the 15 constituencies elects one member.
When to Follow the Vote from the US
Grenada keeps Atlantic Standard Time all year. US clocks fall back on Sunday, November 1, so from then Grenada runs one hour ahead of US Eastern Time.
Police officers are due to vote early on Monday, November 2. The general vote follows on Thursday, November 5.
What It Means for US Readers
Grenada’s currency, the Eastern Caribbean dollar, is fixed at EC$2.70 per US$1. The vote is therefore a story about policy and stability rather than the exchange rate.
Grenada is also home to St. George’s University, a medical school with many American students. A calm election and orderly handover matter to them and to their families.
What Is Not Known
We could not confirm the official polling hours or the schedule for announcing results. Turnout cannot be forecast from the material available.
No poll from an established polling firm is public, and no prediction market lists the Grenada contest. Whether the NDC holds its majority, or the NNP returns to power, is unknown.
