Mexico’s Peso Holds A Tight Range As Stocks Push Fresh Records

Mexico’s year-end markets are restrained: tight FX ranges, low volatility, and equities at records even as flows cool.

Key Points

  1. USD/MXN is near 17.95 per $, with the dollar index stuck in the high-97s.
  2. Banxico’s 7.00% policy rate still supports carry, but FX technicals favor selling rallies.
  3. The IPC is at an all-time high, yet near-term momentum looks stretched.

USD/MXN traded at 17.9499 in early Friday dealing, after a 17.8585–17.9556 range. DXY futures were about 97.65 at the Dec. 24 close and sat around 97.7–98.0 into Friday.

In a holiday note, Monex said the peso was moving in “a very narrow range” because volumes were low and the dollar was weak.

Implied FX volatility was 5.44% annualized, reinforcing the sense that positioning—not headlines—is steering the market. In this climate, predictable policy beats grand promises.

On the daily chart, USD/MXN is below moving averages, RSI is in the mid-30s and MACD is negative. On the 4-hour chart, momentum has improved slightly, but the early-December down-channel persists.

Levels in focus are 17.86–17.90 support and 17.98–18.03 resistance. CME data show Mexican peso futures volume near 26,310 contracts, open interest around 257,608, and an open-interest rise of about 1,443 contracts.

The S&P/BMV IPC ended Dec. 24 at 65,616.43, up 0.03% on the day and about 2.58% on the week, with 24.6 million shares traded for 2.183 billion pesos (about $122 million). Actinver estimates the index is up 3.13% in December and 32.53% in 2025.

Top five winners: Corporativo Fragua (+4.14%), Grupo Kuo (+3.45%), GBM (+3.13%), Liverpool (+2.66%), and Alsea (+1.75%).

Top five losers: TEAK (-15.53%), CMR (-3.36%), Nutrisa (-2.17%), Televisa (-1.96%), and Becle (-1.73%). Daily MACD is positive with RSI in the mid-60s; on the 4-hour chart RSI is near 70.

Flows explain the selectivity. The Mexico ETF EWW is up about 57% year-to-date, but shows net outflows of roughly $114.86 million (1 month) and $289.98 million (3 months), even as one-year flows are about +$290.85 million.

Biggest weights include Grupo México, Banorte, América Móvil, FEMSA, Walmex, airport operators, Cemex, and Peñoles—meaning a handful of blue chips are carrying much of the story.
