Mexican OXXO chain opens five convenience stores in city of São Paulo

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Raízen, the energy giant, now also has convenience stores in the country’s largest city to compete with those of major retailers like Pão Minuto, Carrefour Express, Hirota, or other express markets.

The company entered into a joint venture with Mexico’s FEMSA Comercio and created Grupo Nós to explore Selecta convenience stores located in gas stations, but also the proximity market with OXXO. The first stores in Brazil were opened in the city of Campinas to test the Brazilian market.

The group announces this Thursday, 24, the opening of five stores in São Paulo, in the South and Central zones. Before opening stores, the company conducts a study with intelligence tools to open a small store tailored to each region.

If it is an office region, the convenience store will have more snacks, cold drinks and prepared foods. If it is more residential, it will have more cleaning products, groceries, spices, eggs.

Oxxo is a Mexican chain of convenience stores, with over 18,000 stores across the continent. It is the largest chain of convenience stores in Latin America. Its headquarters are in Monterrey, Nuevo León. It is wholly owned by the beverage company FEMSA (Fomento Económico Mexicano).

OXXO was founded in Monterrey in 1977. In the first stores, the only products sold were beer, snacks and cigars. The success of the stores was such that the project kept growing and OXXO built new locations rapidly, becoming an ubiquitous presence in Mexican cities and towns.
