Markets Pause Gains as Crypto Faces Volatility After Historic Week
On July 16, 2025, digital asset traders observed a cooling in momentum after extraordinary valuations and volumes moved global crypto markets. Price and volume data published by leading exchanges informed this analysis.
Bitcoin traded at $117,815 early in the session, down modestly from the previous day’s high. The daily chart displayed price holding above key exponential and simple moving averages, while the four-hour chart revealed the effects of recent profit-taking.
Major moving averages on the daily timeframe still pointed upward, confirming the ongoing uptrend. Bollinger Bands showed price consolidation against the upper range on the higher timeframe, but contraction on shorter intervals signaled volatility had declined during the night.
A precise assessment of the Relative Strength Index revealed BTC’s momentum fading from overbought conditions the prior day, now standing near 68 on the daily and about 52 on the four-hour view.
This aligns with a MACD histogram that flattened, signaling loss of short-term bullish momentum but no clear reversal. The convergence of 50, 100, and 200-period moving averages at lower levels provided firm technical support; prices remained well above these markers.

Trading volumes declined from previous peaks but remained historically high. Spot bitcoin ETF inflows, which delivered more than $400 million in new capital, showed that institutional participants led last week’s rally but moderated exposure overnight.
ETF activity drove both price appreciation and subsequent volatility as traders hedged and rebalanced portfolios. Bitcoin’s retreat from the $122,000 top stemmed from profit taking across leveraged platforms, as confirmed by derivatives positioning and CME open interest data.
Ethereum diverged positively, closing the session at $3,138 with over five percent daily gains, attributed to robust inflows into newly listed spot ETFs.
Analysts noted increased Layer-2 activity raised user fees, which reinforced short-term demand for ETH. XRP held above $2.92, supported by a record in open interest and healthy spot and derivatives volume, even as immediate upside met resistance near $3.
Solana ended the day at $162.73, modestly higher, but struggled with resistance near $168. The chart showed evidence of a double top at this level.
Litecoin climbed above $8,200, outperforming many peers due to halving expectations and a focus on potential ETF approvals. Select altcoins experienced wild swings: ANI rallied by over 1200 percent, while TAC dropped almost 60 percent amid speculative rotations and thin liquidity.
Macro factors, including anticipation of stable interest rates and muted macroeconomic data, steadied markets against equity volatility, while regulatory clarity in major jurisdictions sustained ETF appetite.
Current sentiment points to a pause after record rallies. Markets now rest at profitable levels as participants absorb inflows and prepare for the next directional move.
Technical support remains strong across large caps. However, a decisive break above $122,000 will be required for bulls to regain full control.
A drop below $115,000 could accelerate short-term selling. Markets remain sensitive to changes in institutional flows and regulatory headlines, making the next moves highly data dependent.
