India invites Brazil as a strategic partner in the Global South

The bilateral relationship between India and Brazil has seen marked development, reaching US$15.1 billion in 2022.

This progress is attributed to combined diplomatic efforts to strengthen their mutual ties, recognizing Brazil’s potential as a strategic partner in the Global South, a group of developing nations striving for a greater role in global decisions.

Multilateral collaborations between the two countries have been emphasized in platforms such as BRICS, IBSA, and G20.

“India seeks a stronger collaboration with Brazil to tackle shared challenges, setting a precedent for cooperation,” commented Saurabh Kumar, Secretary Indian Ministry of External Affairs, during his visit to Brazil in June.

Additional Indian delegates, including congressmen, also visited Brazil, illustrating the intent to enhance bilateral relations.

A meeting between the nation’s leaders is expected in the upcoming G20 summit, currently chaired by India and to be succeeded by Brazil.

Kumar highlighted the potential for further growth in bilateral trade.

“While current trade levels show positive growth, it is a fraction of India’s US$1.5 trillion total. We recognize the huge potential yet to be explored,” he stated.

Focus areas include pharmaceuticals, commodities, and defense industries.

Despite a slight decrease in trade volume in early 2023, India remains committed to strengthening ties with Brazil.

Kumar assured, “Brazil is a valuable strategic partner for India, and our relations are based on shared global vision, democratic values, and economic growth.”
