Haitian police deny links of prime minister to assassination

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Haitian National Police today denied in a statement that there is any link between interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph and the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.

The statement is a denial to a report published by the Colombian television Caracol, which asserted that the FBI is investigating the possible relation of Joseph with the assassination.

“The Haitian National Police specify that, contrary to the allegations spread by the Colombian media Noticieros Caracol, the evidence and other information collected in the framework of the investigation do not reveal any link with the prime minister, and the suspects have not made any revelation in this regard,” the note states.

The Haitian police also assured that it is “on guard against any diversionary maneuver” and renewed its determination to continue the investigation into the assassination, perpetrated on July 7.

So far, 23 people have been arrested in the case, including 18 Colombians and five Haitian-Americans, while three Colombians died in shootouts with the police.

According to the Haitian investigation, the mastermind of the plot is Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a doctor residing in the United States, completely unknown in Haitian politics and who, according to the version of the authorities, aspired to assassinate Moise to replace him as head of state.
