Graphite Production in Mozambique to Skyrocket in 2024

The government of Mozambique anticipates a significant increase in graphite production for 2024, with an expected output of approximately 329,040 tons.

This is a considerable increase, over 180% more than the current year. These numbers are part of Mozambique’s Economic and Social Plan for 2024.

The plan is a vital part of the country’s budget. To make this estimate, the government looked at the plans of two leading companies.

Both of these firms mine graphite in Mozambique. Despite a slow market, the government remains hopeful.

Until mid-2023, the market saw only 22% of expected activity. This led Twigg Exploration and Mining to pause its operations for a while.

Twigg is a branch of a larger company called Syrah Resources.

For some context, Mozambique made 120,000 tons of graphite in 2020. Then, production went down to 77,116 tons in 2021.

For 2022 and 2023, the estimates are 182,024 and 117,416 tons, respectively. The 2024 goal marks a giant leap.

In the past, the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy showed concern. They worried that Syrah’s decision to pause could hurt overall production.

Syrah had stopped because of low demand and an ample supply already in storage. Still, the company made news when it agreed to supply Tesla with graphite for car batteries.

Another company, GK, also mines graphite in Mozambique. Unlike Syrah, GK has not stopped its activities.

GK is a part of a bigger company based in Germany. So far, this parent company has not told GK to stop mining.
