Cabo Verdeans in Brazil Seek Direct Flights

Since the 2020 pandemic, Cabo Verdeans in Brazil have lost direct flights to their homeland.

Now, a four-day journey through Lisbon costs up to $3,000. To address this, almost 200 people have signed a recent petition.

Community spokesperson Andrea Ferreira claims the lack of direct flights makes the community feel undervalued.

“Our contributions to Cape Verde’s growth are significant. The current situation hurts economic bonds fueled by trade with Brazil,” said Ferreira.

Before the pandemic, not only Cape Verdeans in Brazil but also those in other South American countries used these direct flights.

“The issue affects the entire South American Cape Verdean community,” added Ferreira.

Now, the only remaining travel option is both pricey and tiring. Especially for students who are part of the PEC-G program in Brazil, affording this journey is difficult.

To continue their studies, they often need to return to Cape Verde, which is now a challenge.

The petitioners hope the government or national airline will find an alternative. “We’ve contacted officials but received no reply.

With this new petition, we’re trying to involve more governmental bodies,” concluded Ferreira.

Background

Direct flights between Brazil and Cape Verde have a long-standing history. These flights served as vital links for family, trade, and education.

Brazil and Cape Verde share a unique bond due to a shared colonial past under Portuguese rule.

Cultural and linguistic ties have continued to flourish over the years, making the issue even more critical.

The interruption of flights has been a significant setback, affecting not only personal connections but also economic activities.
