Foreign Investors Log Eight Days of Consecutive Withdrawals from Brazil’s Stock Market

Foreign investors pulled millions out of Brazil’s stock market for eight sessions in a row, as shown by official B3 trading records. By July 17, 2025, this wave of withdrawals reached over R$5 billion ($900 million) for the month.

The exodus started after the U.S. set a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, triggering fears about falling profits and increased risks for Brazil’s biggest companies.

This rush to sell Brazilian stocks hit the country’s financial system hard. The Brazilian real lost 12% of its value in just one month, settling at R$5.55 per dollar. Stock prices reflected this anxiety.

The main market index, Ibovespa, dropped below 136,000 points, while exporters like Vale and Petrobras saw a steep dip in their share values. While foreigners sold off, Brazilian institutions bought R$886 million worth of shares on July 17.

Despite this purchase, their overall investments are down by R$117 million for the month and by R$30.2 billion this year. Individual investors added R$1.2 billion in July, bringing their yearly net investment to R$7.6 billion.

This movement of money shows how quickly one policy decision can shake confidence in an entire market. Until this trade shock, foreign investors had put R$21.4 billion into Brazil’s stocks in 2025.

Now, key risks—trade barriers, a weakening currency, and government uncertainty—threaten that earlier optimism. Brazil must restore trust fast if it wants to avoid more losses.

The past weeks prove that tough global markets, especially in trade, can quickly turn investors’ attention away—even after a year of big gains.
