Focus: Brazil’s Rising Inflation and GDP Forecasts

Brazil’s Central Bank today updated its Focus Report, revealing upward revisions for inflation and GDP growth for 2024 and 2025.

Analysts have raised the 2024 Consumer Price Index (IPCA) forecast slightly from 4.05% to 4.10%.

This adjustment marks the second consecutive increase. The 2025 inflation projection also increased from 3.90% to 3.96%.

Meanwhile, the 2026 forecast remains steady at 3.60%, consistent for eight weeks. The 2027 forecast persists at 3.50%, unchanged for over a year.

Regarding IPCA’s controlled prices, no changes were noted this week. Projections for 2024 are stable at 4.59%, with 2025’s outlook remaining at 3.90%. The 2026 estimate holds at 3.50%, unchanged for 24 weeks.

General Price Index (IGP-M)

The IGP-M projections for 2024 have slightly increased from 3.49% to 3.52%. The 2025 forecast has risen from 3.95% to 4.0%.

The 2026 inflation projection also edged up to 4.0%, while the 2027 forecast stays at 3.70%.

GDP Growth Expectations

The GDP growth rate for 2024 has been revised upward from 2.15% to 2.19%. For 2025, the projection adjusted slightly from 1.95% to 1.94%. Projections for 2026 and 2027 remain fixed at 2.0%, indicating ongoing stability.

Interest and Exchange Rates

The 2024 forecast for the Selic rate, Brazil’s basic interest rate, holds at 10.50%, with the 2025 rate staying at 9.50%. Forecasts for 2026 and 2027 maintain a steady 9.0%.

The 2024 exchange rate for the dollar remains stable at R$ 5.30. However, slight increases for the subsequent years suggest a cautious yet evolving economic landscape.

Public Sector Finances

The 2024 primary result forecast remains at a -0.70% GDP deficit. The 2025 outlook worsened, moving from a -0.67% to -0.70% deficit. Conversely, the 2026 forecast improved from a -0.55% deficit to -0.53%.

Debt and Trade

Public sector net debt projections are consistent across the forecast period, indicating a stable fiscal position.

Trade balance estimates for 2024 hold steady at a positive US$ 82.0 billion, with slight increases anticipated in the following years.
