Focus: Brazilian Inflation Forecasts Rise for 2024-2026

The latest Focus Report from Brazil’s Central Bank reveals a changing economic landscape. Analysts have adjusted their inflation predictions upward for the coming years. This shift reflects ongoing market uncertainties and challenges in achieving stable price levels.

For 2024, the median forecast for the National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) increased from 4.59% to 4.62%. This change, though small, signals growing concerns about price stability. The trend continues into 2025 and 2026, with inflation estimates rising to 4.10% and 3.65% respectively.

These figures exceed the Central Bank’s inflation target of 3.00% for all three years. The bank allows a 1.5 percentage point margin above or below this goal. However, the new forecasts suggest achieving this target may prove challenging.

Top-performing economists, known as the Top 5, also revised their predictions. Their 2024 IPCA estimate rose slightly to 4.56%. Forecasts for 2025 and 2026 remained steady at 4.00% and 3.70%. These numbers indicate a cautious outlook among expert analysts.

The basic interest rate (Selic) projections show a mixed picture. Estimates for 2024 and 2025 remained unchanged at 11.75% and 11.50%. However, the 2026 forecast increased from 9.75% to 10.00%. This suggests expectations of prolonged tight monetary policy.

Economic growth projections for Brazil remained largely stable. The 2024 GDP growth forecast held at 3.10%. For 2025, expectations inched up slightly to 1.94%. The 2026 projection stayed at 2.00%. These figures point to moderate but consistent growth expectations.

Recent economic data supports cautious optimism. Brazil’s economy grew by 1.4% in the second quarter of 2023. The third quarter results, due on December 3, will provide further insight into the country’s economic trajectory.

Currency forecasts also saw revisions. The median estimate for the US dollar at the end of 2024 rose to R$ 5.55 ($ 0.97). For 2025, it increased to R$ 5.48 ($ 0.96). The 2026 projection remained at R$ 5.40 ($ 0.95).

Top 5 analysts maintained their end-of-year dollar estimate at R$ 5.75 ($ 1.01). However, they raised their 2025 and 2026 forecasts to R$ 5.83 ($ 1.02) and R$ 6.00 ($ 1.05) respectively. These adjustments suggest expectations of a slightly weaker Brazilian real in the coming years.

These evolving forecasts reflect a complex economic environment. Policymakers face the challenge of balancing growth with price stability. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether these predictions hold true or require further adjustment.
