M. Dias Branco Faces Steep Profit Decline in Q3 2024 Amid Market Challenges

M. Dias Branco, Brazil’s leading biscuit and pasta manufacturer, reported disappointing financial results for the third quarter of 2024.

The company’s net profit plummeted by 51.9% to R$ 124.7 million ($21.9 million) compared to the same period in 2023. This sharp decline reflects the challenging market conditions faced by the food industry in Brazil.

The company’s EBITDA also took a significant hit, dropping 48.1% to R$ 228.9 million ($40.2 million). Net revenue fell by 12.1% to R$ 2.403 billion ($421.6 million).

These figures paint a picture of a company struggling to maintain its market position in a competitive environment. Sales volume decreased by 6.9%, from 450,500 tons to 419,300 tons.

This reduction in sales volume contributed to the overall decline in revenue. The company attributed this drop to various factors affecting the market.

M. Dias Branco cited higher wheat prices in Q3 2024 compared to Q2 as a significant challenge. The increase in wheat prices stemmed from reduced expectations for the 2024/25 harvest.

This situation highlights the vulnerability of food manufacturers to agricultural commodity price fluctuations. Palm oil prices also saw an uptick towards the end of Q3 2024.

Unfavorable weather conditions in South American cultivation areas drove this increase. These commodity price changes directly impacted the company’s production costs.

The Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) represented a larger portion of net revenue in Q3 2024 compared to the previous year. This increase was primarily due to lower fixed cost dilution resulting from the 6.9% decrease in sales volume.

M. Dias Branco’s performance reflects broader challenges in the Brazilian food industry. The company’s struggle to maintain profitability amid rising costs and decreasing sales volumes underscores the need for strategic adjustments in a competitive market.
