Federal Deputy Luiz Lauro Filho Dies at 41 in Campinas, São Paulo State

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Federal Deputy Luiz Lauro Filho, 41, died on Monday, May 18th, after suffering a heart attack. He was assisted and was eventually admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Centro Médico hospital, in Campinas.

Luiz Lauro Filho felt unwell for about two hours and was rushed to the hospital, where he was escorted by his brothers. The information is that the deputy suffered two cardiac arrests and died in the early afternoon.

The Deputy is the nephew of the Mayor of Campinas, Jonas Donizette, who released a note about his death. The Mayor also decreed a three-day official mourning in Campinas due to the Deputy’s death.

“Luiz Lauro Filho, my nephew, son of my brother Luiz Lauro Ferreira and Iara Fais Ferreira, died today, May 18th, victim of a heart attack. He leaves two brothers and two young children. Luizinho, as he was known, was very happy and outgoing. He will be greatly missed. I ask for everyone’s prayers, particularly for my brother Luiz Lauro. Losing a child is an immeasurable pain. If possible, in your prayers, ask God to give him and his whole family solace”.

The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia, lamented the death of Lauro Filho and said that the news “shocked and saddened” everyone.

“The premature death of deputy @luizlaurofilho shocked and saddened everyone in the Chamber of Deputies. Young and active, he was particularly active in issues related to municipalism and the environment. I pay our respects to his family and friends”.

The Campinas City Council, where he started his political career, also released a note lamenting the loss.

“Unfortunately, Campinas has lost a young political leadership. He was a good son and a good father, and little by little he was gaining his space in the city”, said the Mayor, City Councilor Marcos Bernardelli, in his message.

The governor of São Paulo, João Doria, posted a note of sorrow on his social media.

“With sorrow, I have received the news of the death of the young Federal Deputy Luiz Lauro. My condolences to his family and friends. I am very sad”.

The PSDB (Brazilian Social Democracy Party) also issued a note of sorrow, signed by the party’s president, Bruno Araújo.

“We deeply regret the unexpected death of Federal Deputy Luiz Lauro Filho. Young, but already with a long history of working for the good of Brazil. Condolences to the whole family”.

With the death of Luiz Lauro Filho, Deputy Ricardo Silva will take his seat in the Chamber of Deputies.

The Deputy’s memorial service is reserved for the family. The burial was scheduled for 6:30 PM on Monday at Flamboyant Campinas Cemetery.

Training and career

Luiz Lauro Filho was born in Campinas on June 10th, 1978. Son of radio host, former city councilor, and former state deputy Luiz Lauro, he graduated in Social Communication – Advertising and Publicity at PUC Campinas. He later completed post-graduate studies in Economics and Public Management.

He began his political life in 2004 when he was a candidate for the first time as a Campinas City Councilor. The chair, however, only came years later, when he took over as a substitute between 2011-2012. He was then directly elected and remained in office until 2014, when he was elected a Federal Deputy for his first term, in the 2015-2018 administration.

In the next election, he was the fifth most voted in the state by the PSB in the 2018 election and was the first substitute-deputy for the coalition in the Chamber. On December 6th, he was expelled from the party. Soon after, on December 10th, he joined the PSDB.

Luiz Lauro Filho took a seat in the Chamber of Deputies on December 17th last year. He was a substitute and took office after Jefferson Campos leave of absence. On April 1st, 2020, he was sworn in after the death of Luiz Flávio Gomes.

He leaves his wife, Larissa Prado Carvalho, and two children, aged five and three.

Carlos Sampaio, Federal Deputy and leader of the PSDB in the Chamber, wrote on social media:

“It was with profound sadness that I received the news of the death of my friend and Federal Deputy Luiz Lauro Filho, of the PSDB. Young, with a contagious joy and passion, Luiz Lauro suffered a heart attack in the early hours of Monday. My condolences to his family and friends”.

Cauê Macris, State Deputy for the PSDB and President of the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo, wrote on social media:

“I want to express my deep sorrow for the death of Deputy Luiz Lauro Filho and also express my condolences to all his family and friends. Luizinho, as he was known, was only 41 years old and suffered a heart attack. May God console everyone!”

Rafa Zimbaldi, State Deputy of São Paulo, wrote on social media:

“I received the news of the death of Deputy Luiz Lauro Filho with sorrow. May God comfort the family in this moment of extreme pain and grief.”

The National Mayors’ Front, in a note on social media:

“We lament the death of Deputy Luiz Lauro Filho who coordinated the #FNP bench in the Chamber, in 2017 and 2018. By expressing our condolences to the president Jonas Donizette, his uncle, we extend our condolences to family members and friends”.
